On Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins
Though written 15 years ago, this book still may be one of the best overviews of how our brains might work. It lays out a blueprint for how the neocortex behaves and postulates about the future capabilities of intelligent machines.
His prediction on when we would build intelligent machines appears to have been off. Although great progress has been made in the world of “AI”, today’s AI is not what Jeff is describing in this book. The “when” part of predictions is notoriously hard, but I am confident it’s just a matter of time before we create the type of AI that Jeff describes, whether that be in 10, 100, or more years.
